Great Book Club at Carrie's House, New Book Selected
We had a great time at Carrie's house last night, discussing her book selection, The Anatomy of Peace. Some of us got *free* therapy and advice about interpersonal relations and being at peace even when others are intentionally 'pushing our buttons.'
Those of us who attended were: Carrie, Jen R., Kellie L., Xenya, Maylynn, and Cheryl A. Amber B. was there most of the time, taking a break from her studies across the street. It would have been even more fun with more people!!!
The treats were delicious, too! Brownies, Mexican dip, potato skins with sour cream, warm cookies right from the oven...
So let's all read this month's book, The Visions of Ransom Lake, so that we are more likely to attend book club Wednesday, October 1 (7:00pm) at Tammy's house (or a resturant of her choosing...)

Old Book / New Book

Michelle Reyes hosted book club in August. Her selection, which she had not read previously, was A Lantern in Her Hand by Aldrich. It turns out she found it a bit depressing.
Carrie Sanders selected this month's book and will host book club in September. She has chosen Anatomy of Peace by the Aldridge Institute.

Xenya Picks Her Book for June

The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom
It really is a great and inspiring book. Lots of people say it's their favorite book ever. Even though it's about the Holocaust, it's full of hope and beauty.
A quote from Corrie ten Boom:
"Every experience God gives us . . . is the perfect preparation for the future only He can see."--Corrie ten Boom
Book Club will be Wednesday, June 4th 7:00pm (Place TBD)

How Book Club Went on 4/2/08
We met at 7:00 at my house and discussed "Watership Down" by Richard Adams. Ivy, Jennifer R, Xenya, and Allison were all there. I knew our numbers would be low...long book. Hopefully we will have more people for the next one.
I spoke to Jennifer Hoyle today at the store and she is leaning toward a) Wendy's or b) Ruby Tuesday's for our next meeting place. Dinner out is always a good draw....Cheryl

Our 2008 Book Club Meeting Schedule
The ladies who attended the "Rebecca" book club this week started a schedule for our meetings in 2008 and agreed that for simplicity's sake we should hold it the first Wednesday of each month. (That's more frequently than usual, but that way if you miss a meeting here or there, it won't be a big deal.)
They also agreed to have ladies sign up in advance to select the book and host (or choose an alternate meeting place, like a park or restaurant...) That way we can all read ahead if we feel like it and we'll all kind of know what's going to happen in the future.
So here is the schedule for the next few months. If you'd like to add your name to the list to select a book and 'host,' let Ivy know and she'll put your name down.
Wed., April 2 -- Cheryl A.'s house (Watership Down by Richard Adams)
Wed., May 7 -- Jennifer Hoyle (Grime and Punishment by Jill Churchill)
Wed., June 4 -- Xenya
Wed., July 2 --
Wed., Aug. 6 -- Carrie S.
Wed., Sept. 3 --
Wed., Oct. 1 -- Tammy Br.
Wed., Nov. 5 --
Wed., Dec. 3 --

Book 27: Watership Down by Richard Adams

It seems like the perfect book to read as we go into spring and think about bunny rabbits this Easter season.
A brief synopsis of the book from Amazon:
"I announce with trembling pleasure, the appearance of a great story." The London Times
"A NOVEL FOR JUST ABOUT EVERYONE... An instant classic. It's a book that has just about everything—depth, suspense, style, and substance." New York Daily News
"HAIRBREADTH ESCAPES... Adams is a master of menace and suspense, I read the last hundred pages at a gulp, heart thumping." New York Review of Books
"A GREAT BOOK... A CLASSIC... This novel with inevitably compel you into its reality, replenish, and renourish... Do not miss this book." Los Angeles Times
"ASTONISHING... EVERYONE WHO CAN READ ENGLISH SHOULD READ IT." St. Louis Post-Dispatch
A brief synopsis of the book from Amazon:
"The story follows a warren of Berkshire rabbits fleeing the destruction of their home by a land developer. As they search for a safe haven, skirting danger at every turn, we become acquainted with the band and its compelling culture....Adams has crafted a touching, involving world in the dirt and scrub of the English countryside, complete with its own folk history....As much about freedom, ethics, and human nature as it is about a bunch of bunnies looking for a warm hidey-hole and some mates, Watership Down will continue to make the transition from classroom desk to bedside table for many generations to come." --Paul Hughes
And some of the reviews (to pique your interest):
"ONE GLORIOUS ADVENTURE AFTER ANOTHER unfolds before us, and all of it is fascinating, even thrilling, reading... Richard Adams is a master storyteller." New Haven Register
